Dr. Henry Cabrera’s Love for Lavender Blossoms into a Thriving South Kingstown Business
After a long day practicing as a local anesthesiologist, Dr. Henry Cabrera trades his medical profession for the peaceful embrace of Lavender Waves Farm. This tranquil haven, once a personal pastime, has transformed into a flourishing business and cherished home. Visitors from all over are drawn to this outdoor paradise, where farm animals roam freely amidst the serene surroundings.
Dr. Cabrera, a passionate and forward-thinking agricultural entrepreneur, embarked on his journey when he acquired Lavender Waves Farm in late 2016. His vision was not only to restore the farm to its historical grandeur but also to implement sustainable and innovative farming practices.
A Lavender Paradise in Rhode Island
Nestled on 14 acres in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Lavender Waves Farm is a dream destination for lavender enthusiasts. The farm boasts over 4,000 perennial lavender plants, arranged in an idyllic layout radiating from a central gazebo.
Why lavender?
“I was attracted by its multiple health benefits, including support for low blood pressure and relief from stress and insomnia,” shares Dr. Henry Cabrera.
The farm transforms its lavender harvest into a range of products such as essential oils, lotions, and candles, which are beautifully packaged and sold to visitors.
More Than Lavender: The Farm’s Unique Residents
Lavender Waves Farm is also home to nearly 100 animals, including rare camels, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, geese, a white peacock, alpacas, and a llama.
“A lot of people ask me what I do with the animals,” says Dr. Cabrera. “And quite frankly, I just love the animals.”
The farm features unique breeds like Gold-laced Brahma chickens and pilgrim geese, enhancing its charm and appeal for visitors.
Preserving Rhode Island’s Agricultural Heritage
The property, previously known as Gatewood Farm, has a storied agricultural history as a bacon and sausage producer. Over time, the land was subdivided and fell into disrepair.
“The property has long-established agricultural roots,” explains Cabrera. “But farming is a tough business. Eventually, the property was subdivided and sold off to subsidize the farming operations throughout the years.”
Upon purchasing the farm, Dr. Cabrera began an extensive restoration process. Renovations included repairing the barn, installing electricity and water systems, creating new stables, and building rotational grazing pastures. A garage was also constructed for equipment storage.
“When I was figuring out how to design the whole thing,” Cabrera recalls, “it just occurred to me to put a gazebo in the middle and then have all the rows of lavender meet right in the center. That’s what we did.”
Events at Lavender Waves Farm
The farm’s lavender fields burst into bloom each June, inviting visitors to take part in unique activities like lavender yoga. These yoga sessions, held on summer Sundays, allow guests to relax amidst the fragrant fields.
The peak bloom season, from mid-June to early August, also features the popular “Cut Your Own Lavender” event. Visitors can wander through the fields, cut their own bundles, and learn about lavender varieties and cutting techniques from Dr. Cabrera.
A Luxurious Farm Retreat
Lavender Waves Farm offers a cozy, rustic one-bedroom suite perched atop a converted garage. Guests enjoy direct views of the lavender fields and unique design elements, including amethyst geode sinks, a handcrafted coffee table, and an antique wheelbarrow.
“I call the farm suite ‘luxuriously rustic,’” Cabrera explains. “I wanted it to be a luxury place yet a rural, rustic place that people could enjoy.”
Family Support and Heritage
Dr. Cabrera credits his family for the farm’s success. “This was not something I created on my own,” he says. “To do it, I’ve had to hire people from the very get-go. I’ve had my family here, and the teamwork aspect has been important.”
His parents, who relocated from Miami, played an integral role in getting the farm up and running. Cabrera also acknowledges his Cuban heritage, recalling stories of his family’s farming roots before the Castro regime disrupted their lives.
“I’m sure [farming] is in my blood,” Cabrera shared on OnlyGood TV. “My grandfather used to tell me stories about it. I often think ‘where would I be right now?’ if it weren’t for the Castro regime because I would probably be in Cuba, maybe managing some big tobacco plantations.”
Lavender Waves Farm’s Remarkable Growth
What began as a personal passion project has evolved into a successful enterprise. Dr. Cabrera’s commitment to creating a unique and welcoming experience has garnered glowing reviews and a loyal following.
“The response I’ve received to what I’ve created has exceeded all my expectations,” he shares. Visitors rave about the farm’s beauty and the enriching experiences it offers.
“This is one of the most special places I’ve visited in a long time,” says Jodi Cummings, a recent guest.
As Lavender Waves Farm continues to flourish, Dr. Cabrera remains dedicated to sharing his love for lavender and ensuring every visitor enjoys an unforgettable experience.
